Do you walk the talk? Have you ever said one thing and done another? I’m not really talking about deliberate lying here. I certainly hope you don’t do that. But what I am talking about is almost as bad.
One of the primary weapons that undermines our lives, destroys our marriages, deteriorates our bodies, ruins our careers, and kills our dreams is neglect. And sometimes we don’t even realize that we are doing it. We neglect ourselves, we neglect our families, we neglect our careers, and we neglect our passions.
Neglect is the act of not caring or paying attention to someone or something. Neglect is failing to make the important things in our lives a priority.
When you neglect your health, money, relationships or personal development, they become run down. They start to look like the old dilapidated house down the street from you. You know the one – with broken windows and chipped paint.
You put on weight or start fighting with your spouse. Your debt grows. Your happiness tanks because your goals are on the back burner. You start to lose your purpose in life when you neglect the things that matter most.
And then we try to justify our bad behavior. We try to talk our way out of it.
But you cannot talk your way out of a problem that you behaved your way into. The only way out is to behave your way out. What does that mean? It means you have to walk the talk.
Have you heard these common sayings?
- Practice what you preach
- Do as you say
- Walk the talk
- Actions speak louder than words
All of these sayings really mean the same thing. It all boils down to three little words.
Behavior Never Lies
You see…the real you is not defined by your words at all. Your essence is found in what you do every day.
That is why you must choose to live deliberately and live with a purpose.
Walk the Talk if you Want Results
By taking a look at your behavior and the results you have achieved, everyone can see a crystal clear picture of your commitment, gain a sense of your character, and get an understanding of your beliefs. We can tell what type of attitude you have and see what you really made of.
How is that possible? Because behavior never lies. Either you walk the talk…or you do not.
Think about an Olympic gold medal athlete. Look at her behavior. She is up at the crack of dawn every morning practicing with her trainer. She eats healthy and gets enough rest. Look at her results. She has gold medals and fame. What does her behavior and her results tell us about her?
Look at a great mother. She spends quality time with her children every day. She is patient, kind, and consistent. She models the attitude and behavior she wants to see from her kids. Look at her results. She has well behaved and happy children that excel in life.
Look at the woman who runs her own business and makes a fortune. She prioritizes and plans her day. She sets goals and follows through with commitments. She makes wise decisions with her time and money. She has a clear vision of her purpose in life. Look at her results. She is financially stable, and her business is thriving.
I’m certainly not saying these women are perfect. None of us are. But on a day-to-day basis, they work towards their goals and their results reflect their efforts. We can immediately tell what their values are by looking at their behavior and their results.
Your behavior is a reflection of what you believe about yourself. It tells us what you value in life and how you think. It lets everyone know what you do (or don’t do) on a daily basis.
So if you are going to commit your life to your goals (wealth, achievement, success, fitness), then you have to modify your behavior.
Here is how to do it.
- Address your Inconsistencies – inconsistent behavior is confusing to others and confusing to yourself. People with true success in life have one thing in common. They walk their talk. If you are serious about getting results, you have to make sure there are no inconsistencies between what you say and what you do. You have to build strong daily habits that support the life you want to live.
- Believe in Yourself – In order to get rid of all of that self-doubt and worry, you have to believe that you do have the ability to change. You can change your behavior. You can get results. You can walk the talk.
- Model Behavior you Want to See from Others – If you want your children, your spouse, your boss, your employees, your coworkers, or your friends to act a certain way…what better way to get that result than to model that behavior?

Once you embrace the truth that behavior never lies, you will have a better understanding of yourself and those that live in the world with you.
What it Means
Everything (yes – everything) you do should align with your life goals and purpose in life. If something (anything) does not align, you simply should not do it.
It may sound impossible, but it really isn’t.
Let’s talk through an example.
Let’s pretend that you have 3 goals that you are actively pursuing:
- Lose 15 pounds by June 2017.
- Secure 3 new clients by April 2017.
- Spend 2 hours of quality time with your child each day.
When you wake up in the morning, every action you take should support your goals. You could choose to hit the snooze button or you could choose to hit the treadmill. You could choose to grab a donut on the way to the office or you could choose to make a smoothie. You could choose to browse social media or you could choose to work on your sales page or pitch a new client. You could choose to watch TV after work or choose to go outside and play ball with your child.
Remember that behavior never lies.
And we will all be able to tell what your level of commitment is. It will not be a secret. You won’t fool anyone. So don’t neglect the things that matter the most to you.
If you start walking your talk every day, you will see a difference in your life, your success, and your relationships. You know how you should behave and what you should do…now you just have to go do it.
